Each quarter, we’ll feature one of TPG’s business divisions to gain a high-level view of their work. This quarter, we spoke with Patty Borst, Consultant/National Practice Leader, Total Absence Management (TAM), who has more than 30 years of experience in the employee benefits field.
“The opportunity or need we’re solving for in leave management and ADA accommodations is huge,” says TPG’s Patty Borst. “Most every employer in the US is facing an increasingly complex regulatory environment. Everyone is struggling with this, and our staff can help.”
She and her team of six total absence management experts (and currently, two interns) are busy. Very busy. With industries of every type and size across the nation facing challenging regulations on how leave management and ADA is handled, the TPG team is quickly becoming the go-to source for information, industry best practices, benchmarking, program management, and consultation.
The team is well-versed in the many complex compliance issues and regulations related to remote work, ADA accommodations. disability laws, COVID-related leave, state-mandated family leave policies, and more. For example, 11 states have enacted paid family and medical leave. TPG’s TAM team has developed the needed tools to assist employers with education, analysis, and administration. States with paid leave programs include California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Washington, the District of Columbia, and Connecticut, while the programs in Oregon, Colorado, Maryland, and Delaware have yet to go into effect.
While demand for their services is high, the TAM team is growing at an intentionally measured pace, adding employees as well as new product technology with forethought. “We are listening to the customer about what they need,” Borst says. For example, TAM can reduce administration time and woes exponentially via Absence Navigator, a bundled solution for employers with under 1000 employee that gives them the tools they need to manage leave of absence effectively while adhering to regulatory compliance laws. (In fact, you can hear Patty Borst present “Harnessing HR Technology” at the 2022 DMEC Annual Conference, August 1-4, in Denver, CO.)
“There is overwhelming anxiety about complying with leave regulations, different from state to state, that company HR reps don’t have the time to learn and understand,” says Borst. “Call our team at TPG! We know the best practices to help both administrative staff as well as employees themselves understand their rights and navigate through difficult leave management situations. We create a better experience for everyone.”
